Pride of Virginia has grown from a small crabbing operation in 1965 which
had one freezer, to a
company that now includes four Northern Neck plants with freezer capacity of
40,000 square
feet, and also its own trucking company to handle all shipping needs.
|
|
Pride of Virginia has a wide
product base, ranging from menhaden, herring, mudshad, and other bait fish
locally from pound
net fishermen and purse seiners on the Chesapeake Bay and also as far away
as Massachusetts, to
menhaden oil, chum, and other by products of bait fish. Some days the
company handles a million
pounds of fish to satisfy orders among commercial watermen who need the bait
to fill their pots to
catch blue crabs, lobsters, crayfish, and other seafood. The fish are packed
and frozen in 1 pound
boxes up to 100 pound crates. The bait is stored in freezers at 10 degrees
below zero insuring the
very best freshness possible.
